A Laboratory Technicians Are Wanted
Laboratory technicians support scientists and help carry out tests, research and investigations. You would work in areas such as scientific analysis, the health service, and education. If you are interested in practical science, testing and analyzing things, this job could be perfect for you.
Having a curious mind and an eye for detail will help you solve problems in the lab. You’ll also need to be well aware of health and safety. To become a laboratory or lab technician, you would usually need at least four GCSEs (普通中等教育证书) including science, maths and English. For some jobs employers may expect you to have A levels or a degree.
Whatever area you work in, your main duties are likely to include: setting up experiments or investigations, carrying out risk assessments (评估) for lab activities, collecting and analyzing samples, preparing solutions and cultures, recording and presenting data, and making sure that equipment is clean and in good working order.
In an educational setting, you would also set up equipment and show experiments. You would usually work in a team that includes scientists and other technicians. With experience you may also guide lab support workers or junior technicians.
You will usually work 37 hours a week as a fulltime lab technician. You will usually work in sterile (无菌的) lab conditions and wear protective clothing such as lab coats, safety glasses and gloves. In some industries, you may need to travel to carry out field work or collect samples for analysis.
Starting salaries for lab technicians are around £15,000 a year. With experience this can rise to between £20,000 and £25,000 a year. Senior lab technicians may earn £30,000 a year or more.
